Your preparation Cheat Sheet for Mt Everest basecamp trek

Physical preparation for successful Everest basecamp trek

Most importantly your training need to focus on walking. Any other exercise will help increase your fitness and stamina but most importantly you need to be able to walk up and down the mountains, sometime gradual inclinations and other times steep uphills/downhills.

A typical day will involve around 15km of hiking over the course of 6 hours – not a crazy amount considering it amounts to just under 3km per hour. The challenging part is that this will be mainly uphill and on rocky, unstable terrain. Make sure even when you stop for the day, that you stretch your muscles and pace so they don’t cramp up and fail you on the trek. You can try some pacing even before the trek to turn it into a habit.

Our support includes providing a dedicated tour manager based in Australia for every customer. This person will provide you proven tips on training and including what to do, how often to do, where to do etc. We provide general information and answer all questions to help all travellers make informed decision towards booking the right package with right company. If booked with us, we immediately start guiding you specifically on all preparations including trainings, positive mind set, sorting your gear list, reviewing health and safety issues etc.

Mental strength to plan, prepare and complete this basecamp trek

Having a positive morale, and upbeat attitude is an important part of any endurance trek. There will be days on the trek when it is cold, and your legs will tire, but you will have to push through and find the strength to carry on. It is important to read up on what to expect, and talk to local Nepali trekking expert who are based in your home country, who have lived the life in your home country and understands the Western way of life so can ensure that the standard of service expected by the traveler are delivered in Nepal and often exceeded.

Some people train in altitude chamber. While this is not a must, this may be taken as a mind over matter and do once/twice a week session about 4 to 6 weeks prior your departure to Nepal. If this gives you extra confidence why not.

Spirituality when it comes to Everest basecamp trek

Spirituality is an important ingredient to survive in remote mountains. The people living in the Himalayan regions pray to the Mountains and take them as their God. Keeping an open mind, a good soul, and reeling in positive energy is everything when you’re out in the vast, open spaces, especially when travelling in remote away from any material distractions.

Clear motives

Those that climb for fame, fortune, recognition, or to set or break records, are not climbing with a pure intention, it is important to have pure and clear intentions. Climb for the climb, once you fall in love with the act, it no longer becomes a task, or anything that requires effort. It turns into passion.

If you’re wondering whether you are fit for the Everest Base Camp trek, just believe that you are! We’ve seen people of all ages and sizes pull it off, so you’re going to be alright, just keep your will strong.

Gear list suitable for your Mt Everest basecamp trek

If you are going very soon, you should at least have a proper hiking boot that you should have been wearing on your training so that the boot is well worn-in. For other things, we encourage you to get your gears reviewed by one of our trekking experts. You can save lot of money by obtaining insight on what works best so you don’t end up buying items that you may not need. Your cloth selection must be based on multiple layers and combination of breathable and warm items. You should also prepare for unexpected weather e.g. rain or snow fall regardless of when you are going. As part of onboarding upon booking a tour we will help you with shortlisted gear selection that is most suitable to your personal circumstance.

For a copy of our recommended gear list, please click here.

Please note that list is comprehensive. We always work with each individual customer post booking confirmation to review the list and shortlist the items based on their tour program, activity level, duration and circumstance.

Vaccination for Nepal trek

You will need to take about 3 to 4 vaccinations. As part of your onboarding upon booking a trip with us, we will provide you a recommended list and what to do.

Health and safety in Nepal

Have you had a good understanding of the altitude sickness and general facts on management of it? Our onboarding process will ensure you have this understanding, and our operations ensures that you have the highly experienced and trained SHERPA guides, (yes Sherpa the tribe similar to Tenzing Norgay who was the first one to climb Mt Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary) to look after you and escort you to the basecamp and bring you back.

Are you aware that you will need to keep an eye on what food you eat in Kathmandu and on trek to stay out of trouble so you can complete your trek.

Watch out for trekking companies who focus on killing your walking spirit and actively finding ways to make you sick along the way so they can organise a helicopter evacuation in return of well-paid commission.

Unlike above, we thrive on our success rate of getting maximum people to the basecamp and to back this up, we provide you money back guarantee if we failed to get you to the basecamp due to altitude sickness. Please refer to T&C in website and flyer detailing this guarantee. There is lot more to know about health and safety. Please consult with us.

You will need to talk to us if you have special dietary requirement e.g. vegetarian or gluten free food.

Choosing travel date for Everest trek

If you have a choice then you would like to travel when the sky is mostly clear and view are magnificent. Oct and Nov will be such time and later in Nov till Jan become very cold. Mid to end Sep is also best time to travel. Mid-March to Mid-May are also best time of the year to trek in Everest.

Most of the companies will publish fixed departure dates. If this date does not suit you, you do not have much option because in this case, it becomes a private tour to travel on your own date and this cost you hefty surcharge.

At Sherpa Hike, we provide flexibility for you to choose your own date if our fixed date does not suit you at a negligible surcharge if any.

Comparing apples to apples to find best deals on Everest basecamp trek

There are too many companies, too many offers and too many middle men. You will see these days there are companies online who just list packages from different companies but add no value or take no responsibility of the acts of the trekking agencies in Nepal. These companies take a hefty commission from every sale made through their website which puts an enormous pressure on the trekking company which is already publishing a super cheap price for the basecamp trek in order to be competitive. If you have understood some simple facts, then this should raise an alarm bell to you that something is wrong here – most likely the trekking company will have to be cutting corners to make up for their minimum margin to survive. Any wrong doing by the trekking companies can put the lives of trekkers at risk as the region of Everest is not free of life threatening risks.

Check list for comparing Nepal trekking companies

Well, you can use following checklist to shortlist or select your best Everest base camp trekking company to book with.

Keep in mind to add your personal preferences of budget and service quality related questions apart from this checklist when finalizing your booking decision.

  1. Check reviews/testimonials of each trekking operator in your short list
  2. Ensure that they have affiliation with AFTA (Australian Federation of Travel Agents)
  3. Is their price quoted in Australian or American dollar?
  4. How many days is the actual trekking in the planned itinerary? How well is acclimatisation planned in the itinerary? Is there any contingency plan to tackle cancellation of Lukla return flight?
  5. Is their base camp trek operator in Nepal a licensed tour operator registered with Nepal Tourism Ministry and Trekking Agency Association of Nepal?
  6. Are there local experts available in Australian operators’ office who can provide guidance on place, culture, language and food in Nepal?
  7. Does Australian company provide guidance on all types of preparation including training, gear purchase and packing list for your Everest adventure
  8. Your loved ones from home being able to enquire your whereabouts 7 days a week during odd hours in case of emergency in Nepal/Everest
  9. How are the local crews including guide and porters looked after during the Everest trek?
  10. Can you choose to travel in your small private group and/or choose your own dates without a surcharge?

Trekking Companies operating from Nepal

Some of these companies advertise regularly on Google. You will find that these companies have prices equal to or higher than some of the top travel agencies known in Australian market. This will tell you that the quality of operation is of high standard from these Nepal based companies.

This should also suggest to you that other companies based in Nepal and selling Everest basecamp trek at a fraction of cost compared to this must be indicating that their service is of much poor quality compared to these other companies.

What constitute quality when it comes to Nepal trekking

There is vast difference in quality of guides used – from worst nightmare to bearable or at the other extreme – the top Sherpas in the country. The Trekking company is second most important variable given that there are so many mushrooming entities in Nepal and are unregulated to great extend and rarely governed, and on top authorities are corrupt. The attitude, experience and qualification of these mushrooming companies and their staff are so poor that it only adds risk to travellers, not only degrading the experience. Quality of hotels in city, lodges on trek, transfer vehicles used also make huge difference in your level of experience.
